VOCABULARY

Development of vocabulary is a daily focus in 3rd grade.  New vocabulary is developed in all areas of the curriculum through our reading of both fiction and non-fiction materials.  Math vocabulary is reinforced, recorded and used in context as well.

GRAMMAR

Sentence writing and grammar rules are reinforced daily.  Use of the SLAMS acronoum (Sentence, Length of sentence, A Mechanics – capital letters and punctuation, S) is used as a daily reminder!

SPELLING

Each week students will be give 3 types of spelling words to work with and study.  The first are HIGH FREQUENCY words.  These are words specific words in the English language that are commonly found in texts and are used regularly in students’ writing.  The second type of words are CONTENT AREA words.  These are words specific to our units of study specifically social studies, science and math words.  The third type of words are WORD STUDY words.  These words are based on spelling patterns.   Students will learn the “rules” associated with each new pattern and will take part in literacy activities throughout the week to gain more exposure to the pattern. When students take their weekly assessment, they will be given words that follow the pattern we have been studying throughout the week.  Some words will be those that they have been studying at home, and some will be new words that follow the pattern.  This will help us assess how well students can apply the spelling pattern to different words instead of only assessing them on how well they can spell isolated words that were memorized for the test.  Research shows that this approach to spelling leads to more accurate spelling of words when students are composing their own pieces of writing.
