READING

Our reading program is a workshop approach that incorporates an anthology and leveled books that are matched to the child’s instructional reading level.  Mini-lessons are held during Reader’s Workshop to teach strategies needed for comprehension.  Literature Circles, book chats and written responses to the reading are also included in reading instruction.  Our guided reading program allows students to read books on the appropriate reading level and apply strategies for understanding and comprehension.  The children have a reading bin that should be full at all times, containing a variety of genres to choose from.  Students keep a weekly log of the pages and book titles they read each day.  It is expected that students will use the same book in school and at home for their daily reading and will frequently complete book responses before, during and after completion of each book.
