Week of January 30, 2012
READING: We have concluded our book clubs focusing on a book series. Students have also created
a “series”recommendation poster and short script which they will present to their classmates to convince them to read the series! We will change our focus from fiction reading to a nonfiction study. This month, students will be immersed
into biographies, nonfiction articles and informational books. Your child will be gathering information from these sources they read and learn how to use organizers to collect the facts. Our SCIENCE and SOCIAL STUDIES learning is integrated with the nonfiction reading unit.
We will continue our “test taking” unit. Ask your child about the test taking strategies we have discussed and practiced. These include strategies that are to be used with both math and reading activities and assessments.
WRITING: Narrative stories continue to be our focus.
Elements of writing a newspaper article will also be practiced as well. (who what where when why how…)
This is another form of expository writing. It is wonderful to see great progress
with the weekly writing prompts being done!
WORD WORK: Continued practice with nouns, plurals, contractions. We will have only 10 spelling words
this week. These 3rd graders are wonderfully growing as cursive writers.
MATH: We are
progressing well with unit 5 - Place Value in Whole Numbers and Decimals
REMINDERS:
We will be exchanging Valentine / Friendship cards if your child wishes to. I just ask that if your child does
choose to give valentines, please have one for each child in the class. We don’t want hurt feelings on such a
happy day! They can be sent in February 12th, 13th or 14th.
